Secure and Trusted Paradigm for Interoperable eHealth Services

KONFIDO advances the state of the art of eHealth technology with respect to four key dimensions of digital security, namely: data preservation, data access and modification, data exchange, and interoperability and compliance.
To address the challenges of secure storage and exchange of eHealth data, protection and control over personal data, and security of health related data gathered by mobile devices, KONFIDO takes a holistic approach by targeting all architectural layers of an IT infrastructure. The concept for this system will be based on Bitcoin’s concept of block-chain transaction database where all transactions associated with a citizen’s electronic health record or personal health system will be incorporated in a unique chain of blocks.
A Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system will be specifically tailored for a federated architecture in the healthcare domain, fully compliant to the OpenNCP model. As such, it will be able to detect potential threats and abnormalities, perform comprehensive and intuitive analytics and implement escalating mitigation strategies.
The solutions proposed by KONFIDO seek to prevent unauthorized access, loss of data and cyber-attacks even from the cloud provider itself. The proposed solutions will be tested in a realistic setup and deployed upon a federated cloud-based infrastructure so as to exchange data and achieve interoperability of services cross-border.
Given that KONFIDO makes use of already widely accepted results and that it exploits a series of complementary technologies, some of which have already reached a high level of maturity, there is a significant potential concerning the cross-sector transfer of innovation in the field of coordinated care in respect to an improved acceptance of healthcare solutions.

Impact

The expected impact of the KONFIDO project is summarized in the points below:
• Better acceptance of eHealth solutions among patients;
• Encouraging Member States to widen the use of eHealth;
• Ensuring the right of patients to cross-border healthcare;
• Supporting the development of European legal and operational standards for cross-border data exchange and patient privacy protection;
• Better protection against unauthorized use of personal data, breach of confidentiality and cybercrime;
• Increasing the awareness of stakeholders, private and public ones, on the current level of data security;
• Definition of clear architectures that will promote interoperability between eHealth solutions;
• Advancement of available information security and privacy technologies, being one of the first reference implementations to integrate a series of solutions proposed by EU projects (OpenNCP, STORK/eIDAS etc).
